Our Favorite Spots to Stop for a Bite (or a sip) on the North Shore of Lake Superior

Knife River

Russ Kendall’s Smoke House
1498 Scenic Drive Knife River MN

Our Knife River neighbor to the south (about a mile).
Kendall’s is a family-owned (for over 100 years) operation
selling mouth watering smoked fish, jerky, cheeses, wild
rice, syrups and more. This local gem is worth the stop and
the wait in line – which often runs out the door. We promise,
the fish really is that good; their smoked salmon spread is
worth traveling to the North Shore for in itself.

Great! Lake’s Candy Kitchen

Just a few doors down from the resort sits Great! Lakes Candy Kitchen. We think there’s just something special about Knife River- this is yet another shop where the goods are so good that patrons line up outside just to get in the door. Known for the mouth watering “Cherry Smash” and much much more this scratch made candy store has been making small batch candy in copper kettles for over 100 years. Kids & adults alike will delight in the Bear Trail. The trail was designed and painted by artist and co-owner Patricia Canelake & lies just behind the shop. It is the perfect spot to dig-in to your goodies and savor the sweetness. Be sure to order a bag of birch tree chocolate pretzels which are divine.
(This is a seasonal business open April 22-Dec 23).

Historic Downtown Two Harbors

Louise’s place
19 Waterfront Drive Two Harbors Mn

Husband and wife team Marsha & Dan run this cozy little shop in downtown Two Harbors. The storefront is bursting with local and unique grocery items. They feature meats from local farms, sustainable beauty products, fresh baked bread and more. Our favorite Louise’s specialty is the take & bake meals (must try: Shepherd’s Pie) which come frozen & ready for your oven. Stop by for a delicious breakfast and lunch as well, classic & tasty food is served here always.

Castle Danger Brewery
17 7th street two harbors

Sample the taproom menu with a flight of beer, or have a pint on the patio. Castle Danger Brewery is a must-stop when visiting Two Harbors. With views of the Two Harbors Ore-docks, and a lovely outdoor patio this is a great spot to meet friends. Their patio is often bustling with food trucks, and the tap room hosts everything from paint nights to game nights and live music. Check their website for a calendar of events. In a hurry? Grab a growler to-go and take a taste of their fantastic beer home with you.

Madeira Bistro
632 1st Ave Two Harbors

Just across the street from Castle Danger Brewery is yet another great locally owned business. Featuring gourmet sandwiches, bowls and baked goods; this Bistro is the perfect spot for a glass of wine with lunch. They serve a multitude of gluten-free options and have a wide variety of vegetarian dishes. We highly recommend the Thai Peanut Bowl which is spicy, indulgent and just delicious.

Betty’s Pies

We’re pretty sure you already have this on your list! Perched across from scenic Flood Bay, this iconic North Shore restaurant is bustling, and for good reason. Sure, the pie is out-of-this-world. But make time for a meal on your next trip up because the Betty’s breakfast skillets are fantastic, and their pasties are a classic North Shore experience you simply must try. They offer whole pies to-go, and nothing pleases a crowd more than entering a room with your arms full of a fresh Betty’s pie to share.
