Winter is ideal for exploring miles of back woods, river valleys, ridges and overlooks on the miles of excellent snowmobile trails near Grand Superior Island View Resort. The big trail is the North Shore State Trail, running parallel to Lake Superior from Duluth to Grand Marais, with lots of access points along the way. Two of the main access trails are right in Two Harbors and at Gooseberry Falls State Park. Other great rides that also lead to the state trail are the Red Dot, Moose Walk and Sawtooth Trails traversing the forests from Beaver Bay through Silver Bay and Tettegouche State Park inland to the tiny town of Finland.

View staggering cliffs along the forested, rocky shoreline of the world?s largest freshwater lake or listen to ice sheets crack and grind their way along the waves crashing on the glacial shoreline. Sounding like something between a train and a crumbling building, this natural wonder is locally known as the ?Lake Superior Ice Train. At the end of the day, stop your rig along the edge of a dense forest as the sun sets, and you might hear the call of a lone wolf.
