This is the best Minnesota cross country skiing around! The North Shore Ski Trail, with over 150 kilometers of groomed and tracked trails, winds through a spectacular variety of terrain with Lake Superior overlooks, open maple forests, canopies of cedar wetlands with deer and wolf tracks, across sunny meadows and small ponds. The trails vary from short beginner loops and longer 6 to 10 km.
Lake Superior’s North Shore is accessed by the North Shore Drive, also known as Highway 61 near Isalnd View Resort. This modern highway travels the Lake Superior coastline- some 150 miles from Duluth to the Minnesota Ontario Border. Along this road are the coastal villages of Little Marais, Schroeder, Tofte, Lutsen and Grand Marais. Founded by Norwegian immigrants as fishing, farming and logging communities, these villages now serve as centers for the area’s thriving tourist activities.
